C1 S15 - Gartak and the King

This session played July 3, 2025.

Overland E6 Swamp (SAFE) - Day 9 First Light - Overcast

We awaken peacefully for once, uncharacteristically refreshed.

Ryarn: It can’t be far now. The King’s flotilla must be close.

? Solodark oracle: Does Gartak recognize this area?

1d20: 18 → Yes!

Gartak: You are correct! The flotilla is just beyond the morning’s haze to the northeast. Their ferries make landfall on the beach to the east—less vulnerable to ambush than the wooded beach to the north, on the other side of the mouth.

Daeniel: Have you met this King before?

? Solodark oracle: Unlikely.

1d20 (disadvantage): 14; 13 → Yes, but.

Gartak: I have, but many years ago, before he ascended to his father’s made-up throne.

Ryarn: Tell us about that—what was he like? And what of the father, the old King?

Solodark prompts 2d100: 98; 1 → UNCOVER FAULT

Gartak: I had recently opened my doors at the Corner Sundries in Skalvin when they arrived. The King brought documents—bills of sale for land, if I remember correctly—that he suspected were forgeries or fraudulent. He demanded I inspect the documents for authenticity.

? Solodark oracle: Did they travel with guards? Likely.

1d20 (advantage): 12, 17 → Yes.

1d4: 3.

Gartak: They entered with three armed guards, but they seemed green, not as intimidating as one might expect of a “royal” retinue. The King himself was an anxious sort. Not surprising given his position. The son, on the other hand, seemed a monster. I will never forget the gleam in that young man’s eyes as he looked around the shop, probably looking for something he could steal.

Brolga: Carlsby’s fear of speaking too critically in earshot of his goons suggests his demeanor hasn’t changed much.

Gartak: Quite so. The more generations of so-called Kings that rise to that so-called throne, the more real its power becomes.
