Reflections on a Year of Solo Roleplaying
It’s been almost a year and a half since I picked up my copy of Shadowdark and started my solo roleplaying journey. Now that I’m slowly revisiting those early entries in my ongoing adventure, I can’t help but notice all the ways my game has evolved, both for the better and, unexpectedly, away from some practices and priorities that I’ve long since forgotten about that I might want to bring back into the foreground.
Getting into solo roleplaying.
The tabletop RPG scene has always been on my periphery, beginning with a stalled-out session zero of 2E Dungeons & Dragons in high school, of which the most memorable part was spent listening to my buddy attempt to explain THAC0. Fast forward to May 2025, and on the heels of a ninety-two hour playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3, I thought it would be so awesome to give the hobby a proper try.
